Awsome bike for the price!

by Chris on Dec 06, 2011

"I was looking for a bike in this price range, and seriously, I test rode them all. This bike was by far the most comfortable. I have owned it for about 9 months and could not be happier. The only thing I would change is that I bought a triple sprocket, a double would do fine. The only complaint is the brakes, not bad, but I will eventually replace them...."  Read Full Review

Great Bike - Average Parts

"Excellent bike for the price, but the front shifters are not worthy of a Trek bicycle. Shimano Tiagra are unreliable and difficult to consistently make it into gear -- especially the front shifter! I would not recommend the bike without upgrading the shifters...."  Read Full Review

What a Beast!

★★★★☆

"The new 2009 Trek 2.1 is outstanding! If you want bang for your bike at entry-level pricing this is it!!!!! The new paint job is exceptional compared to the older models. This bike really stands out out there! You'll love the blue fade is person. Just got it as the first one at my shop on 10/28/08. I use this for commuting, recreational exercise, and hopefully for some serious training for a tri in the future! Although I haven't tested out its limits yet, the bike feels so light and insanely fast that I'm sure it gives higher ends (like Madones) a run for its money. Very light for an aluminum frame (esp because of the carbon fiber Without my accessories...feels less than 20 lbs. Carbon stays are great at absorbing some shock on rough ground, but nothing can take it all away on a road bike. Components are great. Rear derailleur is a 105 which is just amazing and shifts smoothly, the Tiagra front is good, but it definitely doesn't shift as smoothly as the 105. A little later when I have the money, I'll probably upgrade my front to match 105 or maybe ultegra. But for now Tiagra suffices. The seat is OK and can be a little rough after a while (and can get dirty easily being white). Possible upgrade later on. For bar tape at the handles I immediately switched to black tape as I knew the white would get dirty quickly. The best thing (and most important) is the frame and geometry of the bike- Trek is unbeatable! Beautiful bike at this price!"

    Pros:

  • Absorbs shock well,
  • Good geometry,
  • Great components,
  • Handles well,
  • Lightweight

    Cons:

  • Front derailleur is ok,
  • Seat not that great

Great road bike

★★★★★
5.0

"I bought the Trek 2.1 after researching Trek, Cannondale, and Giant reviews online. In the end, I based my purchase decision on reviews, price point, and also on the attitude and convenience of my LBS which sells Trek. I rode the 2.1 and also the next higher model, the 2.3, which has better components (Ultegra in back and 105 up front).

Overall, the 2.1 was a fantastic purchase for me. I haven't owned a road bike in 20 years and as I've gotten more serious about cycling and training I wanted a road bike that is good enough to ride "with the big boys". No, I don't hang out with pro cyclists, but I ride with some serious amateurs and I don't feel that the bike is lacking. Of course any road bike made recently far exceeds the performance of almost any bike from even 5-10 years ago, and this bike definitely feels like it transfers power to the road and shifts great.

I spend a lot of time in the house and also use the bike with a Cycleops fluid trainer. I find it's great and doesn't make a lot of noise (neither does the trainer). The only complaint I'd have so far is that riding on a trainer for longer than 45 minutes is uncomfortable and I get some numbness, but that may just mean I need a minor readjustment and/or I need to get a roller instead so I move around more. Riding outside is fine for the first 2 hours or so.

Yes, if you can afford the 2.3 then the stronger components will give you a better shift -- mostly up front where the double chain-ring needs a good component to shift very smoothly. However, for my purposes I don't really care that much and would rather spend the extra money on shoes and clothing. I have ridden the bike around 300 miles so far and I haven't yet regretted my purchase once.

I gave 5 stars even though I mentioned minor discomfort because I didn't think that was really a problem with the bike."

    Pros:

  • Fast,
  • Handles well,
  • Responsive

    Cons:

  • Uncomfortable seat

Beauty in motion!

"I purchased this bike about a month ago. I wanted the red/black which was a popular frame because it took a bit to get into the shop, however, the wait was worth it. This bike is gorgeous and with the 105 groupset it flies. The seat is firm and I rode it in jeans with my wife on her new Bodega and the next day my bum was sore.

Definitely a good way to get into the cycling lifestyle."

    Pros:

  • Fast,
  • Good geometry,
  • Handles well,
  • Lightweight

    Cons:

  • Uncomfortable seat

Well Balanced & Outstanding

★★★★★

"My Previous Trek was a Sport Hybrid and bought it because of my age, I though that I would feel Safe. I could not keep up with my bike team and upgrated to the 2.1 triple, Now I feel Safer, this bike is unbelievable, and outstanding! The 2.1 is so light that my 6 year old Niece can pick it up to her eye balls, thanks to the Aluminum frame, Carbon Seat Post and Carbon front and back forks, this configuration also absorbs shock well on rough ground. After riding 65 miles and having to Climb the two Bridges going into Ocean City, New Jersey, this bike handled outstandingly well and was able to do it with NO Problem. Thank you Trek. Awesome line of Bikes, and Priced Right for the Quality that you get!"

    Pros:

  • Comfortable,
  • Fast enough for me,
  • Good geometry,
  • Great components,
  • Handles well

"I've ridden this bike over 1000 miles..I bought mine in July 2008...I replaced the seat and pedals and have no problems with any of the other components except for the brake pads; I haven't replaced mine because they are acceptable but not great..I hear a lot of complaints about the tiagra front. Mine works as well as the 105 rear because it is properly dialed in..you people that are griping about it get someone to adjust it that knows what they are doing and it will work as well as a 105..after all it is a trickle down 105 and has something that even the higher shifters don't; an optical display...I'll keep the tiagra with one less gear for that feature. The tiagra has a "baby click" for the middle gear. [...] I would be considered an old guy, over 60, but I ride pretty hard for my age. I've got a lttle time trial I ride on a county road over rolling terrain that is a slightly over 7 miles; I was able to average 20 miles per hour on one particular run..that was a challenge for me.. not that great but a mark that I set for myself. To sum it up.. a great training bike that's very fast with good handling qualities..the wheels are not super light weights but I'm around the 200lb. mark so they are fine for me."

  • Comfortable,
  • Fast,
  • Good geometry,
  • Handles well,

Excellent investment

★★★★★
5.0

"Just bought this along with a 2.1 WSD for my wife in February. These are our first road bikes and so I did a lot of research. This is arguably the best bike you can find for the money. Also, it definitely seemed worth it to shell out the extra money for the 2.1 as opposed to the 1.5. (Nicer shifters and the carbon stays). Besides, the blue looks nice!

Shifting is wonderfully smooth and the ride is surprisingly comfortable. I hope to invest in some clipless pedals and shoes soon to make the experience even better.

I don't think you can go wrong with this bike."

    Pros:

  • Absorbs shock well,
  • Comfortable,
  • Handles well

Great Bang for the Buck!!!

★★★★☆

"I got my 09 2.1 last week. Already got 100 miles on it and have loved every one of them. I put clipless pedals on it when I picked it up, and I use Mt. Bike shoes. This is my first road bike. I was using a borrowed older Trek, but the 2.1 is amazing. Fast, and fun to ride. I even like the seat.

Not a big fan of the white bar tape. Looks good when new...but gets dirty fast.

I was originally woried about the Tiagra shifters/front derailer, but they shift really well. I am doing 25+ mile rides with ease, and have decided to train for the 1/2 Tri they have here. I know the bike portion will be no problem with the 2.1, now the swim might turn into a water rescue...

For the price, this bike is the BOMB!!!"

    Pros:

  • Absorbs shock well,
  • Handles well,
  • Lightweight

Fast, fun, and beautiful!

"I signed up for the AIDS LifeCycle and started training with an old, heavy hybrid. I was consistently toward the middle or back of the pack in our training group. I bought the 2.1 and saw VAST improvements in my endurance and performance. I'm now consistently one of the first 20 to return.

The bike climbs well and the triple is a great way for those of us new to cycling to build strength and confidence. It happily accelerates, and the handling is amazing. Fast downhill switchbacks are a real treat with the 2.1 Lastly, the color scheme is amazing; you can't tell from the picutre here, but the blue accents are metallic and glow in the sun. I constantly get compliments on this bike.

If I could make improvements, I would say a better saddle is in order. Long rides (i.e. > 60 miles) definitely leave a lasting imression (and not in a good way). The brake pads could stand a bit more bite, but are easily upgraded. The biggest improvement for this bike would be a better engine! <;^)

In closing, I'm confident that this bike will help me devour the 545 miles from S.F. to L.A. and every ride thereafter. Thanks, Trek, for a beautifully executed machine!"

    Pros:

  • Climbs well,
  • Clix quick-release,
  • Fast,
  • Good geometry,
  • Handles well

    Cons:

  • Brakes could be better,
  • Uncomfortable saddle

"I got interested in road cycling not too long ago and i wanted a bike that i could use to break into the competitive world of cycling. After lots of research I looked towards Trek to deliver the bike i wanted. The 2.1 is my first road bike and it is incredible. I tested many competitors bikes looking for what I wanted and none compare to the 2.1. This bike handles and climbs outstandingly well. I was so surprised Light weigh the bike is.

Great bike!!

well done Trek"
