"It took me about a half an hour with instructions in hand to figure out how to adjust the tension. once I had it figured out it was just too easy. I love the dual sided clip in!"

"I bought these pedals after trying a few different types/brands. I ride quite a bit of cross country, but I climb for the reward of a fast descent.

I also ride clipped in when downhilling, and I found it difficult to engage the cleat into the other pedals I used. These pedals are easy to clip into, and if you don't get clipped in right away, you can still ride for awhile without it felling weird.



I did recently break the plastic outer cage, but that was the result of a direct rock strike on the Downieville Downhill."

"I've used these pedals for the past 7 years on my mountain bikes and commuter bikes. These were the first clipless pedals I bought, so I wanted to ease in with something that would be forgiving if I missed a clip-in. That turned out not to be an issue - although remembering to clip out at stops was :D.



It's very nice on downhill MTB runs to have the extra support of the cage, and the cage also serves to protect the pedal. I've slammed these things hard on rocks, roots, and curbs and they've never broken. The only drawback is that they are not comfortable to ride with regular shoes for over 15 minutes. You can feel the clamp through the soles of your shoes, but it's OK for short rides.



Even after 7 years, these pedals are still going strong...and they'll be moving to my new MTB in a couple weeks. No need to buy new ones as these are still working fine. $10/year isn't a bad rate to use and abuse clipless pedals."

"I just got in to mountain biking about a year ago and finally decided to go clipless. These are a nice first set of clipless pedals. The large platform feels secure after clipping out during sketchy pieces of trail. I also use my bike to commute to school. The platform is big enough that you can wear regular shoes and still get around on the roads reasonably well. I would recommend these pedals to either beginners or those who need an all-around pedal that still has dual sided entry."

"Several people recommended pedals (and shoes) as the most important upgrade they made to their mountain bikes. It was good advice and I decided on the Shimano M424 pedals (and MT33L shoes.) These pedals offer enough platform for a brief ride without clips and easy entry with clips from either side. I wasn't sure if I'd transition well so this combination worked for me.



The good: Installation was a breeze and I was able to get nearly instant appreciation for the gain in power. Surprisingly, I was confident enough to ride after just 20 minutes practice. (This is not typical.) I noticed tremendous gains when climbing and I felt more able to power over/through terrain I would usually have dismounted for.



The bad: 1st timers, you will fall over. You need to train yourself to clip in and out. It eventually becomes second nature. Adjust your clips and teach yourself by leaning against a wall and clipping in and out. Then adjust your clips some more. Take your time to build confidence. Keep these clean. They're best in dry conditions.



Overall: I'm happy with these pedals so far. I feel like I have gains in power, energy and endurance."

"I'm an All-Mountain style rider which basically means I do a bit of everything. Cross Country is mostly what I encounter around my home but I've also ridden black diamond runs on Mammoth Mountain. I use these on my Santa Cruz Heckler and they are much better than my old Crank Brothers Candy C pedals. The M424 SPDs are much more stable on technical and downhill terrain yet climbing with them is no problem and I recently used them on a XC race (Racers and Chasers). Unlike my old Crank Brothers they are adjustable so clipping and unclipping are much easier. If you're like me and enjoy all kinds of riding, these impressively versatile pedals are for you."

"OK I admit I've never ridden street or trail with clips before. I immediately loved the extra power stroke available on graveley up-hills. So, crazed with my new power, I didn't practice enough bailing out before I was beyond the point of no return on a real hill. When I actually think to kick-out, the clips work great! Unfortunately and after a dozed dumps into rock and cactus I want them to invent a clip that ejects me when I'm to stubborn to escape."

"I purchased this set of pedals for my Gary Fisher Mountain bike. I have just started riding some intermediate trails and was a little flustered when I was not able to release as quick as I would like. I thought breaking them in might work, but ended up having to adjust to my liking. Over all I would say this is a good buy for the price."

"These are my first clipless pedals and the guy at REI recommended them he was right on. They were easy to adjust to after one fall, but I had to for the fun of it. Wow it is amazing how much power I have, can't believe I waited so long to upgrade the hills are no problem such efficiency and power I love these pedals. Love the fact that you can adjust the tension very smooth."

"I have used a pair of these for years on the Tahoe area trails. They have held up well. They release pretty well when I need to get out of them in a hurry. My only gripe is that they don't work as well as a "downhill" type platform pedal (the kind with pins) when using non cleated shoes. My foot tends to slip off more than with a downhill platform pedal."
